MA ENB Week In Review: 7/9/10

When the daily news drip goes out of control, and flooded email inboxes have you pulling your hair out, the ENB brings solace! Enjoy these news bits and notes from around the Commonwealth for the week ending July 9, 2010. Stay cool! ;)

  • Governor Patrick announced $33.6 million in federal grants for community development projects in 68 cities and towns to create jobs, spur housing, business, infrastructure and social service upgrades.
  • EEA Secretary Ian Bowles announced the approval of the Commonwealth’s proposed designation of Pleasant Bay on Cape Cod as a No Discharge Area (NDA) prohibiting the discharge of boat sewage.
  • Bowles also issued a formal letter on the Biomass Sustainability and Carbon Policy Study done by the Manomet Center for Conservation Services, and highlighted key changes the DOER plans to recommend for future renewable regulations.
  • DOER suspended formal requirements on Advanced Biofuels Mandate.
  • The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) announced five grants totaling $6 million for projects that will enhance parks and recreational facilities in cities across the Commonwealth.
  • Cambridge Energy Alliance (CEA) and NSTAR reaching out to Cambridge’s small business community to promote energy efficiency measures and accompanied incentives.

  • US Department of Energy (DOE) granted $8 million to ISO New England to cover off a three-year, $18 million project to accelerate installation of smart-grid devices covering every state in New England.
  • New report from Navigant Consulting says US electric utilities must embrace clean energy, energy efficiency to compete in 21st century. Climate change, emerging renewable technologies, carbon costs and volatile fossil fuel prices must drive new business models.
  • Agricultural officials are encouraging residents to take advantage of the array of fruits, vegetables, and flowers to be found at “Pick-Your-Own” farms located across the Commonwealth this summer.
  • Commonwealth Solar II Rebate Program’s Block 3 of funding is currently scheduled to open July 9, 2010.
