On July 16, 2010, Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECO) filed an application with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) requesting an increase in electric distribution rates, to become effective February 1, 2011.
If the rates are approved as filed, residential customers using 600 kWh a month would see about an 8% increase in their monthly bill (approximately $7.50 per month).
On average, business customers who take WMECO’s Basic Service would see bill increases ranging from 1% percent to 6%, depending on load and usage.
The request will add about $28 million to WMECO’s revenues. WMECO said the increase will enable it to continue making needed investments in the electric system to enhance reliability.
The MA DPU has suspended proceedings in this filing until further notice, saying that further investigation is necessary.
